        Teaching Philosophy

 

 

Every child has the ability to succeed in any area of academic study they choose to pursue, both on a personal and a professional level.  My job as a music teacher is to help students to achieve their own personal goals as well as the goals of our educational society through the support of the highest quality of music education.  This music education can only be achieved with the understanding that the educators are teaching their students first and their content second.  A teacher needs to understand their purpose in the development of a child’s unique skills, opinions, dreams, beliefs, and work ethic.  I strive to achieve this education aim through music. 

 

Music serves as a bridge to all of a child’s developmental disciplines.  A student’s education in music can improve the learning goals of language, poetry, human history, information technology, mathematics, engineering and culture.   It is so important that educators understand this co-curricular approach and how each independent subject relates to the overall development of a person. 

 

Music education can be used to develop interpersonal skills such as professionalism, respect, social skills, communication, listening and comprehension.  Important still are the benefits of intrapersonal development, including confidence, emotional expression, dedication, creative outlet, etc.  It is my role as a teacher to encourage these developments through music and to act as a guide as they make their way along the journey to adulthood.

 

I believe that every child within the public school system should have the opportunity to be exposed to music and it is my responsibility to provide a variety of different mediums and settings to provide the best opportunity to learn to love and to understand music.  Music education has a rich history within the American Public School System, and throughout all of humanity.  Our modern society allows for all students, regardless of economic or social status, the opportunity to study music, which provides so many meaningful and diverse opportunities.  As a music educator it is my duty to honor how privileged we are with this prospect and provide the best possible music education program that has the ability to reach and positively affect each student.  Music can support the growth of a child in a variety of ways including, but not limited to; academic, physical, social, spiritual and intellectual.  Not providing each student with these opportunities would be a disservice to the child, our history and our community as a whole.
